The effect of salicylates on the electrolyte structure of the blood plasma. II. The action of therapeutic doses of sodium salicylate and of acetylsalicylic acid in Man. Guest, GM; Rapoport, S; Roscoe C, The Journal of Clinical Investigation. 1945 September; 24(5): 770–774. (FULL TEXT)

Summary: In the plasma of patients receiving therapeutic doses of sodium salicylate or of acetylsalicylic acid, decreased tension and content of CO2, and small changes of pH were found. The plasma chloride was usually elevated, and the sodium was occasionally decreased. The effect of salicylate appeared to be proportional to the dose administered and to increase with the period of medication. The results indicate that salicylates produce primary hyperpnea (abnormally deep or rapid breathing) with consequent decrease of CO2 tension. Various types of adjustment of the electrolyte equilibrium to the hyperventilation were observed.

" Evidence has been presented supporting the hypothesis that at least 2 different types of mechanisms may be involved in aspirin intolerance, one resulting in bronchospasm and the other producing urticaria/angioedema. . . . In a double-blind, crossover study with normal control subjects matched by age and sex 15% (6/40) of aspirin-intolerant individuals had significant adverse reactions to tartrazine challenge and not to the placebo. None of the 40 normal control subjects had any adverse reactions. "
