Questions About the Goodie Basket
Our Holiday Goodie Basket has been a successful fundraiser for the Feingold Association, and from your feedback, it has been very well received. In fact, I bought one for my son for Chanuka, and even though he is an adult, he was so excited to get it. While he has been on the Feingold Program for many years, there were a number of treats that were new to him.

However, some of you have asked questions, and I want to take this opportunity to address them.

Q   Is the $50 donation for the Goodie Basket tax deductible?

A   No - it's not. The IRS explained to us that when you receive value for your donation, you cannot deduct it. In this case, although most of the items in the Basket were donated to us by the companies, you nevertheless are receiving something of value.

Q   How do I know which items are Stage One and which are Stage Two?

A   You can look them up in your Foodlist under "Desserts" for Stage One and/or Stage Two. I promise that for next year, on our List of Donated Goodies, I will also mark each one as Stage One or Stage Two. Of course, some companies donated a variety of flavors - some Stage One and some Stage Two - which were distributed randomly.

Q   I am new to the Program and also bought a Goodie Basket - what can I do with the Stage Two items?

A   You have several choices:

  1. Look up each one in your Foodlist, and give your child only the Stage One candies. Save the Stage Two snacks for Stage Two, which is (hopefully) only a few weeks down the road.

  2. Give your child only the Stage One snacks, and let him treat his friends or family to the Stage Two snacks.

  3. Give your child only the Stage One snacks ... and eat the Stage Two snacks yourself

  4. Go ahead and let your child enjoy all the snacks and candies over the holidays, even though everything else you are giving him/her is Stage One, because:

    • They are better than most of what he was eating before the diet, anyway. You can slide more completely into Stage One right after New Years.

    • Most of the snacks listed as Stage Two actually have salicylate only in the flavorings which (may) contain very little actual salicylate. Most Stage One children who have been stable on the diet can tolerate a small amount of salicylate flavoring occasionally, and for children who are not yet stable because they are just beginning, even these Stage Two items are a big improvement over what they were getting up until now. However, if you already know that your child is a very sensitive Stage-One-only child, don't try this - it's not worth ruining his or her day with a nasty reaction.

Q   Where can I get more of the snacks we like best?

A   Go to the page listing the donated goodies and click on the one you want. That will bring you to its website which will usually either let you order on line or provide a store locator. Squirrel's Nest

OR ...   you can go to the Squirrel's Nest website or call them at 302-378-1033 . Squirrel's Nest carries many specialty items you may not easily find elsewhere. If you have a concern about salicylates, corn syrup, or other ingredients in the candy you would like to order, talk to Nancy at Squirrel's Nest. She is a long-time Feingold member herself.

Holiday Survival Tips From Our Members to You

Use unscented candles - white or with natural color. If you see silver-colored fibers in the wick, hold the tip of the wick and rub a piece of paper across it. If it makes a mark like a pencil, then it contains lead.
Through our Members Message Board, we asked for ideas to help make your holidays Feingold-safe but hassle-free (well, relatively so, anyway). We published these tips last month, but I want to repeat them. Don't forget there are more suggestions in your November issue of Pure Facts.

Next Month in PURE FACTS: The 2010 Fast Food Guide !!
Pure Facts subscribers will be receiving the newest Fast Food Guide along with their December / January newsletter to be mailed out at the end of December.
