We, the undersigned physicians and educators, are troubled by the continued use of synthetic food dyes when numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that the dyes impair the behavior of some children. While the British government is urging food manufacturers to switch to safe, natural colorings, and the European Parliament has passed a law requiring a warning notice on foods with dyes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Congress have done nothing. We urge manufacturers to voluntarily stop using dyes and the government to ban the dyes or require warning notices on foods that contain them.
