It’s no surprise to those of us on the Feingold Diet that another study confirms TBHQ is really bad stuff. The researchers found that the preservative is toxic to the immune system and that children are at greatest risk.
Like its cousins, BHA and BHT, TBHQ is made from petroleum and is primarily used in foods with a high fat content to prevent rancidity from developing. Not only processed foods, but the oil used in deep fried restaurant food is likely to contain it. Alternatives are available, including natural preservatives or peanut oil for frying, but most of the food industry chooses the cheaper option of using TBHQ.
The study was published in International Journal of Environmental Research Public Health in March.
